Why do many Soviet Jews look like ethnic Slavs?

Ashkenazi Jews from all over Europe look similar to me. However, Jews from Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, etc. who immigrated to Israel/America post-USSR often look more Slavic than the average Ashkenazi Jew. Why is this? Is it intermarriage, or forced Soviet culturization, or my own ignorance, or something else?

This may seem like a stupid question, but I really believe that there is a completely different look for post-USSR Jews.
