Why can’t Rabbi Eliezer count to five?

Serious question (despite the title).

For instant purposes, I’m not actually interested in the “deeper meaning” answers of the philosophical differences between each plague being four vs. five. From a purely linguistic standpoint (understanding that my knowledge of Aramaic is, um, poor to say the least) how does R’Eliezer read “fierce anger, wrath, indignation, trouble, a band of evil angels” as a list of four things, rather than five things?
