Where do we draw the line between Halacha and minhag?

I’ve noticed that many Jewish practices are often assumed to be universally required, but I’ve been learning that there’s a difference between halacha (Jewish law) and minhag (custom). Practices like wearing a kippah, how we separate meat and dairy, or specific Shabbat traditions can vary widely between communities and even families.

I’m curious: What do you think is the best way to approach practices that sometimes get blurred between being halachically required and being cultural customs? Are there any practices you were raised with that you later found out were more minhag than law? How do you handle the tension between personal observance and communal tradition?

Looking forward to hearing how others navigate this!
