What makes someone a holocaust survivor?

My grandfather fought in ww2 in the red army. I have other relatives of same generation from former Soviet Union who made it thought the war but lost many relatives. None of them thought of themselves as “holocaust survivors.”

Soviet Jews don’t seem to think of themselves as holocaust survivors. So what makes one a survivor?
