what do hasidic think about gentiles

Hi, i’ve been interested in jewish culture for a while now. I want to learn more and speak to some of the hasidic jews in the areas i visit in upstate New York. We support the jewish stores and walk on shabbat but my boyfriend I have noticed that they give us looks and seem to try to avoid us by walking the opposite direction. My boyfriend’s family says they don’t like people outside their culture and see us as less than. I don’t think this is true based on what i know but maybe it is a deep rooted issue. Can someone explain?
