Hey y’all, I’m struggling to understand my feelings on this so I thought I’d put them to the crowd and maybe generate some discussion.
So, first of all, I’m a massive Kendrick fan. I’ve seen him perform, I have a Kendrick shirt, he’s one of my top artists on Spotify. I’m not a fan of Drake and never understood his popularity. I find his music boring and shallow, and his behavior to be extremely creepy and pathetic long before this beef started.
Obviously, I’m firmly in the Kendrick camp for this beef. Kendrick’s reputation is squeaky clean and it’s satisfying to see a creep like Drake get taken down a peg.
On the other hand, Drake is famously Jewish, and whether we claim him or not, he has claimed US. Watching millions of people gleefully call one of the most famous Jews in the world a pedophile has me not feeling great. ‘They not like us’ feels like an antisemitic dog whistle. So does ‘you a colonizer’.
No before anybody @s me, I know the context and I don’t think Kendrick intended anything antisemitic. Drake is objectively a creep and a culture vulture, not because he’s Jewish, but because he literally claims to be something he is not. He tries to act tough and changes his accent even though he’s from a middle-class white neighborhood in Toronto. You don’t need to be from Compton to be a rapper, and I don’t think Kendrick is claiming that. In ‘Meet the Grahams’, Kendrick tells Drake’s blonde and blue-eyed son that he is a black man and to be proud of that. I think the idea is authenticity. If you’re not from the hood, that’s fine. Just don’t pretend to be. Kendrick has collaborated with many artists and rappers who don’t come from the same place as Kendrick does. Rap, more than other musical genres, is about authenticity.
As for the pedophilia, Drake has never been formally convicted of anything. But there is plenty of evidence of him being a creep to minors. I think I probably wouldn’t care much about Kendrick’s accusations if he weren’t Jewish.
So, what does it mean when a famously Jewish artist is publicly accused of being a pedophile and a colonizer, and both of those accusations have merit? In this case, I think my ‘feelings’ don’t lie with Kendrick, but rather the glee with which the entire world has piled on Drake.
I don’t know. I get it, everyone loves seeing an asshole get taken down a peg. But would the worldwide cultural phenomenon have gained as much traction if he weren’t Jewish? I really don’t know. And Drake is not helping by suing his label for antisemitism, thus publicly connecting between accusations of pedophilia and Judaism. On the other hand, does he have a point?
R/Jewish, is the Kendrick-Drake beef bad for the Jews? Are the worldwide accolades in part influenced by antisemitism? Am I crazy?
