the anxious/neurotic jewish stereotype

there’s been a stereotype out there for who knows how long that jews are anxious and neurotic – clinically or otherwise – and are most likely popping valium or some other benzo. the typical Woody Allan type deal or something similar that i’m sure most are familiar with.

anyone know where this stereotype originates from or any explanations as to why it exists? anyone think this stereotype is pure myth or is it actually true?

personally, i come from a family of holocaust survivors and we’re all a bunch of anxious wrecks. i assume this tradition most likely started in our family entirely because of what my grandparents experienced in the holocaust. maybe jews living through repeated pogroms and persecution throughout history is an explanation as to why this exists?
