Serious question about Judaism

I have read parts of the Torah and listened to the way my family approaches our religion (Judaism). I’m confused about the concept of idolatry. Why do we put great value into physical things and acts? Especially during holidays? Isn’t that what the Torah says directly not to do? Is it possible that some things in the Torah are taken far out of context and far too literally?

When I ask these questions, I always get a nasty response along the lines of “don’t question God” and “it’s in The Torah.” I’m just looking for answers.

Also, I don’t mean this in an offensive way at all, but what is the point of a Rabbi? Why must there be middlemen between us and God?
