Sorry for the mis-spelling of “Hebrew” in the title – apparently you can’t edit titles after the post is – posted?
I posted this in r/AskBibleScholars : “Given that for Jews – the books of the Christian era were not accepted as valid and authentic scripture – who (and in what time frame) unilaterally decided that they could add books to our Hebrew scriptures??? The content from these writings (added to lend credibility to the Christian story of J.) has directly led to many of the persecutions, blood-libels, and antisemitism – including Christian supersessionism and attempts to force a Christocentric view of J. into the Hebrew Bible. So, the question is simple. Who decided that they could simply appropriate our scriptures without our consent?”
This was the response:
“I think ideas like cultural appropriation are simply anachronistic. Syncretism was widespread, and all kinds of foreign religions and deities were incorporated into Greco-Roman mystery religions — Mithras from Persia, Isis from Egypt, and so on. Judaism itself in the early centuries of the common era was far from a monolith. There were numerous sects and diverse scriptural collections, as the Dead Sea Scrolls attest.”
This answer bothers me because it seems to equates “cultural appropriation” as a trivial thing – with an essentially “everybody did it” conclusion.
I think there is an enormous difference between “cultural appropriation” and “religious appropriation” which adding scriptures to ours was. Then, they used these writings to work against us by evangelizing (or attempting to) with our own Hebrew Bible. It lent their scripture a credibility it would not otherwise have had. This seemingly casual addition of Christian scriptures had enormous impact on Jews – and still does to this day. It laid the bedrock for the antisemitism that exists today – and that millions of people either died or suffered – as a result of this.
It truly feels like the concern here is simply being dismissed. Am I overreacting??? I am considering responses but would like your opinions. in
