Question about the טלית

I’ve been wearing my talit for many years like my father and other men of our family, differently than the standard I’ve seen around. It’s much simpler, we have it folded length wise a few times and wear it around the neck and it drops in front of me, I guess kind of like how you would have a towel around your neck but the talit is cleanly put on the neck. All this to ask, are there different acceptable ways of wearing the talit? If so why do most people wear it the same way? We’re European Ashkenazim, if that’s relevant.

Edit: So it seems many people have interpreted the Torah, saying one must be surrounded by the tzitzis of the talit to be “surrounded by the mitzvot” but it’s an interpretation. Conclusion, I guess there are different acceptable ways to wear the talit
