Polish perspective

Hello, I have been reading posts in this subreddit for a few weeks now. What shocked me was the levels of resentment towards Poland and Poles – and as a Pole I would like to address it, don’t leave, just try to listen to me please as I am going to explain some insides.
First of all, there is no denying that there were pogroms and nazi collaborators, it’s a fact and every person who put any effort in researching it knows it. Effort, you may ask – we are not taught about it in schools, so basically you have to want to learn it, and it’s uncomfortable, so many people are just either ignoring it or are unaware of such incidents. I have finished education in Poland and I believe antisemitism was mentioned twice, and not in history classes but in Polish classes. The only point in which Poles were portrayed as antisemites was probably Eliza Orzeszkowa’s short novel “Mendel Gdański”. That’s all I can remember, and I am not super ancient.
In this part I may sound apologetic, but it is not my point. I just feel like it’s not all black and white, especially when we are talking about war. Poles weren’t all antisemitic, there were numerous instances of Poles risking their lives in order to save Jews from the nazis, and these people are celebrated in Poland as heroes. Poles received the most Chasid Umot ha-Olam titles among all nations, which also tells something. Some of you mentioned that Poles were responsible for the scale of Holocaust, which I cannot agree with. The holocaust wasn’t orchestrated by Poland in any way, Poland was occupied by Germans and we had no say. Many people who collaborated were trying to survive, and if someone put a gun to my children’s heads I don’t know what I would do, so it’s hard for me to judge them as they were put in an unprecedent predicament. I believe (and I am not an expert so please take it with a grain of salt) that the scale was so immense because of how easy it was to distinguish Jews from Poles back then (which is no ones fault basically, I am not saying that you should have assimilated or anything). I am not denying that there were numerous instances of Poles murdering Jews themselves or giving them out to Germans, but Jews were giving them out too as everyone was trying to save themselves and their families.
Polish public opinion right now is skewed, as Poland in general does not support Israel (which can in some way be fueled by antisemitism). Our current president sadly is a conservative populists, but two of our ex-presidents publically apologized for the Jedwabne Pogrom.
2RP (Second Polish independent country, 1918-1939) was a messed up country that was poor, unstable and underdeveloped. It was antisemitic, it was uneducated and it was unjust towards Jews. After the war is probably the period that disgusts me the most. Both Kraków and Kielce pogroms were just evil to me (and most Poles I believe), but so thought authorities at the time since the people responsible for the Kielce pogrom were sentenced to death. Then came the 60s.. I don’t really know what to tell you as it’s just so absurd to me, Władysław Gomułka (a communist leader back then) just basically told Jews to leave Poland, which was cruel. The majority of Poles did not support both the pogroms and the actions of the communist government.
Sorry if that’s chaotic, I just wanted to show you how I (and many other Poles) feel about it. We are not evil, there was antisemitism and still there is in some groups, but we are not all like that. There are numerous Poles who cherish and admire both Polish Jews and Polish culture and in bigger cities it’s palpable. Recently I visited Lublin and there are texts in Yiddish written on the walls, there are Jewish restaurants, there are Jewish people being mentioned in the city centre. I believe that Poles are just oblivious to the fact that such things happened, as as I mentioned earlier we are not taught about that in schools.
There was antisemitism, but we are not all antisemites and I wish our image was not created by a small group of idiots that made terrible things. The truth is just hard to accept for us and it is still hard to accept for me and I believe that I made more research on this than the majority of other Poles. I am asking for understanding, because when I entered this community I felt really attacked and I didn’t know why, it’s obviously not your duty to educate people, but we mean no harm and just genuinely want to learn more about your culture.
I don’t want to sound as I am defending antisemitism, I am not. There were horrible acts commited by Poles but I want to point out that we are not all like this, and while reading your comments I sometimes feel like you despise all Poles.

Also, another question to Israelis – do you learn anything positive about Poland in schools? If so, what is it?
