My mother is not Jewish. My father was not given a Hebrew name, and neither was I. I was raised in an area where there was no Jewish community, but I still got parts of a Jewish upbringing. We lit candles on Friday nights, had a family seder, and played dreidel around the hanukiyah. Now that I’m an adult living in a city with a vibrant Jewish community (that fully accepts me as a patrilineal Jew), I’ve joined a synagogue. I know I can choose a Hebrew name, but if I were to go to the bima for an aliyah, what would they use for my mother and father’s names?
