My grandfather was an avid collector of medallions and coins, a passion he pursued with meticulous care until the day he passed away. Among the many items he left behind was a medallion I had never seen before, with a bilingual inscription reading “Jews in Yugoslavia.” Despite our close relationship, he never mentioned this particular piece to me, leaving me in the dark about its significance and origins. One side of the medallion features an image of the Zagreb Synagogue, which was tragically demolished in 1941/42. This discovery sparked my curiosity, and I’ve been trying to uncover the history behind this medallion ever since. However, I’ve hit a bit of a dead end. I’ve reached out to numerous experts and institutions—including archives, university departments, museums, and historians across Vienna, Tel Aviv, Sarajevo, Zagreb, and Belgrade—but no one has been able to provide any concrete information about this medallion. I haven’t been able to find out how many of these were made, why they were created, or what their purpose might have been. I’m reaching out here in hopes that someone might have more information or could suggest a place where I could get this medallion appraised or learn more about its history. (If something violates the rules – feel free to write me private messages.) Any insights or advice would be greatly appreciated!Thank you! submitted by /u/Zelenyyyy |
