Jewish adoption of chapter breaks

I know that the chapter and verse numbers we use are of christian origin. I had heard that we adopted them as a result of the Disputations so that we could understand what verses they were trying to quote. This sounds like a reasonable theory to me, but I haven’t managed to find a source for this. Do any of you have a source, or know of a book (English or Hebrew) that I might find the answer in? Thanks.
