Is naming after relatives who passed away a Jewish thing?

I am not religious and neither is my family but they are Jewish from Ukraine. I am seeing someone who isn’t Jewish and he has the same name as his dad, who has the same name as his dad too but different middle names. He thinks its totally weird that my family names children using the first letter of a dead relative’s name. BUT I think he is a total weirdo that his family uses names of living relatives. Like what is the point of that?

So is what he does a common tradition, is what my family does some sort of Jewish or Russian tradition? I know its a stupid question but it never occurred to me that what my family does is different from others.
