I’m not intending to offend anyone with this post and I am very sorry if I am being offensive, but I was just wondering if I, an African-American Jewish guy who looks visibly as dark as a loaf of well-done challah, is not connected to African American culture, let alone current/modern African American culture in the slightest. I know portions of the history and I love the music, (especially some obscure, older funk/soul music, and jazz, I love jazz!) but am barely able to really connect with it in any way, whereas, Ashkenazi Jewish culture, like that of my family’s, is my entire reference point for almost everything when it comes to culture. I’ve been called an “internalized racist” for this before, and often seen as bizarre by other people, meanwhile I’ve always felt welcome in the Jewish community. I literally cannot picture myself in any other community, because I am a Jew. People have seen that as strange, along the fact that I listen to klezmer music on repeat, and additionally have been told that I “try” to be too “stereotypically Jewish.” I am always very welcomed and embraced at Jewish communities, gatherings, groups and events, even the ones that I have never been to before. I have no African-American vernacular English accent, and don’t really feel black as some black people have said that they do. Is this normal, or do I have some kind of problem?
I really hope this isn’t offensive, (also, if someone reads this years from now, don’t cancel me, it was just a question)
