Is it true you can’t become Jewish?

Mothers side is Roman Catholic which from what I understand is the side of the family Judaism is inherited. (That sounds like a weird way to phrase it sorry) my fathers side, though he is estranged from them, is Jewish, so by all means I’m not Jewish, however I am VERY interested in pursuing the faith.

However, I asked my mother if I could become Jewish and I’m not sure if it’s just her Roman Catholic upbringing that was having an aneurysm or if it’s genuinely true, but she said that you can’t ‘become’ Jewish, you’re just born Jewish.
