If there’s no true consensus on the afterlife, I propose a compromise.

What if instead of a period of punishment for wicked people, or permanent punishment/destruction of the soul for the unforgivably wicked, we had a threshold above which one could be considered good, and below which they could be considered wicked. Just the two categories based on a person’s collective actions throughout their whole life. The good go to heaven and are back with God, while the wicked have their soul’s memories of life erased and reincarnated into another person to try again to be good in the next life. That way, the same soul has repeated chances to be a good person in life, while wickedness is not rewarded.
