We visited a reform shul recently in an area that we’ll be moving to, and I was a little surprised by the differences.
We currently (occasionally) attend a conservative shul (EC) that is incredibly vibrant. I was really excited for the kid-friendly Friday night shabbat service at a WC reform shul, thinking it would be even more fun/vibrant.
It was bleak.
The rabbis were fine. It just seemed like no one wanted to be there. The kids were running around and generally just not in the room (whereas at our shul, children are actively participating and encouraged to be lively/silly and involved), and the adults seemed like they were just putting in their time and there out of obligation.
Which is surprising to me. Maybe it’s the cultural differences between the areas? Is it a conservative vs reform culture? I’m just fairly shocked by it. My non-jewish husband enjoyed it because it was so casual and didn’t have the same “pressure” (aka formality, which is exactly the thing I enjoy).
