I want to bake challe for Shabbat but I don’t get along with my oven.. Help!

So, for the first time in my life I have my oven home (I rent but it’s my name on the lease). I’ve lived here for three years now but due to mental health issues I haven’t done any serious cooking or serious shabbes stuff. Now I’m getting the help I need and I’m slowly starting to come back to the living. And just now I felt the urge to bake a challe for the first time in years(!) but there’s a problem. My oven is shit. It’s a gas stove and I only get heat from the bottom of the oven. It doesn’t matter if I cook things on low heat or high heat, the bottom part of whatever I put in to the oven always gets done before the top and I can never get a nice browning/crispy top. Does anyone have the same type of oven as me but manage to turn out fantastic golden challot? Please let me in on your secret!

Lots of love and thanks in advance from an aspiring homemaker.
