Shalom r/Judaism! I’m excited to share an app I’ve developed that I believe could be helpful for many in our community.
What is it?
Otzar Roshei Teivot (אוצר ראשי תיבות) is an app designed to help decode Jewish acronyms (Rashei Teivot) found throughout Torah literature.
Key Features:
- A comprehensive database covering Gemara, Mishnayot, Halacha, Chassidus, and other teachings
- Works offline after initial download
- Regular database updates (just pull to refresh)
- Search function for quick lookups
- Bookmark feature for frequently used acronyms
- Crowdsourced: Users can submit new or edit existing entries
Why I Created It:
As a Torah learner, I often found myself stuck on acronyms, disrupting my study flow. This app aims to solve that problem, making Torah study more accessible and enjoyable.
How It Can Help You:
Whether you’re studying Gemara, reading a Chassidic text, or trying to understand an unfamiliar term in your learning, Otzar Roshei Teivot can quickly provide the meaning you’re looking for.
Example:
Ever come across אדה”ז in a text and wondered what it meant? It stands for אדמו”ר הזקן (Admor HaZaken), referring to Rabbi Shneur Zalman of Liadi, the first Lubavitcher Rebbe.
Availability: The app is available for both iOS and Android devices.
I’d love to hear your thoughts and suggestions. If you find this useful, please consider downloading and sharing with others who might benefit.
