Has anyone gone through the process of getting a Portuguese/Spanish passport as a Sephardic Jew?

I’m a secular Jew living in Israel, and one side of my family came from Morocco. From what I understand Portugal and Spain have a way for descendants of expelled Jews to get citizenship. I’ve talked to someone from a law firm that specializes in this type of thing and they told me the process is fairly simple and certain but quite long and expensive.

Do you need to be an observant Jew? A member of a synagogue or something?

Has anyone here gone through the process? Any advice? Any particular lawyer or firm they can recommend?
