My non-Orthodox husband has an extensive amount of Orthodox Jewish relatives. We (both jewish) decided to do a smaller destination wedding that was Jewish, but definitely not Orthodox. None of his Orthodox family came (most said it was because of the travel – but we know otherwise),and we ended up having a wedding that was perfect for us and our beliefs. We had a non-traditional ketubah, both exchanged rings, wed under a chuppah. It was beautiful!
My question is – does his family recognize us as married if our wedding didn’t align with Orthodox standards? I’m trying to get a read on what Orthodox think of Jews having a non-Orthodox wedding (like a reform or conservative wedding). I have told him I will not sign a traditional ketubah because of my issues with the get, status of agunah… and we’re on the same page about that.
We care less about whether they disapprove. I’m more interested in the actual belief if our marriage is legitimate to them.
