I’d like to preface this post with the following caveats: 1) I am Jewish myself. 2) I know it’s Shabbat in a lot of timezones right now (it’s not for me, yet 😀 ) and am not expecting a lot of answers soon, if this question is even interesting to other people, but thought I’d better post this while I was thinking about it.
I’m a writer. I’m currently writing a book based on the following prompt: ‘You find your dream house, but there’s a problem: the walls can talk.’ It gripped me, what can I say. I decided the protagonist would be Jewish, and I just got to the part where he realizes he unknowingly signed 285 pages of mortgage paperwork saying he owns a sentient being (the house, who he now knows can talk). This is an ethical problem for him, and I thought it would be fun to throw it out there. Would you see this as an ethical issue? If so, how would you solve it? Are there texts you would go to to solve it?
