Hello all,
A close family member of mine is dying, he has no chance of recovery and has been in the hospital for the past 5 months. He has cancer and the doctors have told us the only thing left is to let him die. He wants to go off treatment too. He’s been fighting cancer for almost 8 years now, and it’s just too much on him; he’s a doctor and knows that he can’t recover.
Is it ethical for the doctors to stop feeding him, or take him off a ventilator? There’s nothing we can do to save him, and he just exists now, not fully conscious and not really living, if you know what I mean.
This has been very hard on all of us, so I’m just asking the fine people online for counsel. Even if we don’t take him off treatment, he has 1.5 months at best, at which point he will probably die sedated. What can I do? How can I ensure he finds peace?
Thank you all deeply
Edit: I apologize if this is ranting-y. I am a wreck now.
