Discovering more on Judaism

Hello again everyone! A few days ago I posted on this app asking about the matrilineal nature within Judaism. From which I discovered that through traditional definitions, I was Jewish. I got very welcoming comments and u/ummmbacon encouraged me to visit a local synagogue. So I did and went to talk to the Rabbi. I told him about the situation and that I have a matrilineal line back to a Jewish family member but never have and still don’t consider myself Jewish. However, I wanted to know more about the religion. He asked me if I had belonged to another religion before and I said no. To cut the story short he said to me, “if you want or do not want to consider yourself Jewish, that’s fine either way but I should not turn my back on my Jewish ancestors as they were forced to hide them being Jewish while Jews now don’t.” (I’m heavily paraphrasing obviously). Basically he told me to honour them. He encouraged me to try out certain aspect of the religion to see if I wanted to follow it, for example read the Torah, go to Synagogue on Shabbat, learn some basic Hebrew or even just wear a Star of David necklace. So I am going to try to get in touch with Judaism and maybe one day I will convert. Anyway I felt that because this community welcomed me then I would tell about my experiences since. Thanks everyone!
