Following some Jewish apologetic sources, for a while I thought that this was Joshua based on Joshua 1:5 and that the prophet from Deuteronomy 18 would be “from among you” i.e. the people who were present at the time.
But looking into it, Joshua is never called a prophet as far as I can tell, and at the final chapter of Deuteronomy it says in v. 11 that “there has not arisen a prophet since in Israel like Moses.” This makes me less certain in the contemporary Jewish interpretation.
So who was Deuteronomy 18 about originally?
