What are the rules regarding treatment of the Torah in preserved synagogues?

For context, on a recent trip I visited Synagogue Aben Danan in Fez (Morroco). This is not an active synagogue. A local Muslim family currently lives there and maintains it as a museum of sorts. Active security is provided for the building. One thing that I noticed is that the ark was open and the Torah scroll exposed which seemed odd to me. I suppose they’re displaying to show the visitors what’s inside the ark. But I imagine this must go against some rules and customs for respective and preserving the scroll.
