Tale as old as time…I (F23) broke up with my non-Jewish boyfriend (M25) about a year ago because I was struggling the fact that he wasn’t Jewish. I am very dedicated to my Judaism (was considering going to rabbinical college, attend shul regularly, keep kosher etc) and both of us knew this going into it. He was open and curious about my religion and recognized it’s importance to me. I was 18 when we started dating and I thought I had lots of time to figure out the Jewish thing, and also thought that maybe it would be okay so long as we raised the kids Jewish, but eventually I realized that I really wanted a Jewish partner. The thing is I don’t know what that means, because lots of Jewish men are not the kind of Jewish partner I want… and he is everything I do want (intellectual, dorky, kind, gentle, outdoorsy, (and not to mention absolutely gorgeous)). I’ve always had this image of coming home on a shabbat to see my husband sprawled out the sofa with some religious book in hand… and he would do that, just maybe not with a religious book.
The thing is is that he was always so interested in my Judaism and even said that he might consider switching over to Judaism (trying to avoid the C word because otherwise my post will get moved to a different category) as he really likes the ritual, familial, philosophical parts of the religion. After a year, where I have talked to lots of other Jews I’m feeling like there are no Jewish guys out there who are nearly as serious or interested in their Judaism as he was interested and serious about my identity. I also feel like I didn’t give him enough of a chance to take part in Jewish culture/ religion (I didn’t take him to shul that often or holidays etc) and I’m really regretting that. I can’t believe I’m still hung up on him but he is genuinely the most perfect guy out there (and I’m really picky). We were perfectly matched in terms of other life values and goals. I don’t know what my question is… just looking for general advice because I’m really broken up about this and miss him so much. Shavua Tov!
Edit: I just want to mention that I live in Canada! We have some cities with kinda big Jewish communities (Toronto, Montreal) but generally small population overall. Depending on the law school I get into, I will hopefully be living in one of these areas but who knows!). Also, he said he MIGHT be interested in becoming Jewish, but no guarantee. He wants to do it for himself, not for me (which obviously I want too! I think that being Jewish requires too many sacrifices (eg. sending my kids to Jewish day school even if it means prioritizing money in very different ways) for someone to do it just for love)
