Shul dues required?

Many times when asked about the top issues with synagogues, I see people complain about how high dues are.

I get the obvious part – a lot of shuls have really high membership dues, and it’s hard to pay them.

But like, I see people talk about this as if they don’t pay, that somehow blocks them from going to that syngague. What?

From what I’m aware in the communities I’ve been around, membership is high and pushed and there’s a lot of fundraising. I can imagine people who attend feel, maybe quite a bit, negative about not being able to pay the dues.

But like, is that a barrier to entry? Are there shuls out there that won’t let people in because they haven’t payed their dues?

Also, from what I understand, shuls tend to work well with accomdating lower income members with reasonable rates.

I just, I don’t know. I’m confused why this is the problem people make it out to be.

What am I missing?
