Question about abortion

Hello lovely Jews! I’m sorry for the intrusion as a non-Jew but I have a question and I hope it’s not offensive to ask.

I’m listening to a podcast about RU496 (the abortion pill), and it got me thinking… I recall learning from someone that in Judaism requires that a woman be allowed to get an abortion if the fetus poses a risk to her life. I think that’s pretty remarkable.

Given the current climate of the United States and the limited access to abortion (even in cases of life or death), would a Jewish woman be able to justify getting an abortion as a religious right? Is there an opportunity for exemption for Jewish women in states where abortion is illegal?

Thank you in advance!
