Cw: PTSD, violence
I am approaching the first anniversary of a traumatic event in my life. Someone I know and loved came to my home, held a knife to my throat, and robbed my wife and I. B’H there were no physical injuries but the event was obviously distressing and has caused me PTSD, which can get worse around the anniversary of the event.
After it happened, my Jewish community really supported us: helped us install a security camera, rearrange our house, and said the birkat hagomeil with us.
As the anniversary approaches, I’d like to find a way to make the day significant in a good way. I’ve been thinking about how our holidays are so often “They tried to kill us, they didn’t, let’s eat”. I’d like to do something to that effect, but I’d also like something that helps cleanse the space a little, since the event occurred in our home. Like the Jewish equivalent of burning sage. But I’m not sure what to do.
I’d appreciate input from any stream of Judaism!
Thanks all. Am Yisrael chai!
