Is it just me, or are other people also bothered by Avraham’s willingness to sacrifice Yitzchak? Or how he seems to be OK with Sara kicking out Hagar and his, i.e. Avraham’s son, Yishmael and leaving them to the tender mercies of the desert.
Perhaps I am just viewing/judging Avraham by our current moral standards. Perhaps I view Judaism as so family-centric, the idea of intentionally breaking up the family is upsetting/disturbing.
And perhaps, like Avraham argued about saving s’dom, he should have been more argumentative with G-d about not sacrificing Yitzchak – perhaps the test was to see if Avraham would refuse.
Especially in the context of child sacrifice that was being performed at the time by other religions. Avraham could have said something like “G-d, I thought you were different than all those other gods that want children to be sacrificed!”
I don’t know. I just find Avraham’s “fatherly” actions quite disturbing/unsettling, and our putting it front and center, i.e. the akeida, on a regular basis just seems wrong to me.
