Why do people say "Ashkenazi", but "Sephardic"?

I see this everywhere: Ashkenazi and Sephardic. The endings are the same in Hebrew. The endings are also the same in Yiddish and Ladino.

I understand that this is maybe more of an English language question, but I was wondering if someone knew when this started, why, and how.

Thanks!
