What was Leviticus 19:27 about?

Leviticus 19:27 in the Bible: ”Ye shall not round the corners of your heads, neither shalt thou mar the corners of thy beard.”

In the Torah: ”You [men] shall not round off the side-growth on your head, or destroy the side-growth of your beard.”

I’ve heard that this passage was referring to the Canaanite tradition of shaving their hair around the ears and upper beard as part of some sort of pagan ritual, and that “Corners of the beard” was about shaving it into a goatee shape, since goatees were popular among Egyptians. This passage might have been a commandment to prevent Hebrews from engaging in pagan rituals or assimilating into Egyptian culture. But I’m not sure about this.
