so i went to a jewish day school then after school hebrew school at a local temple. at 12 or whatever i started studying for my bat mitzvah. honestly i just wanted the gifts, but it was also a right of passage and everyone else did it, ya know?
i was NOT a star hebrew school student. i thought it was bs and didnt keep my opinions to myself. but nobody engaged with me or had a kind, empathetic conversation. it was like shouting at a wall. Now, as an adult, I realize that I just wasn’t vibing with the overly complex, yet dumbed-down format they taught in.
I wasn’t there, but according to my mother, the rabbi said that he would not allow me to get bat mitzvah’d at his temple.
Is this normal?
