There is a cool exhibit you might not know about at the NY Botanical Garden on the amazing Brazilian Jewish modern landscape architect, horticulturalist/botanist/naturalist, painter, sculptor, synagogue-stained-glass-maker, gardener, chef, and writer ROBERTO BURLE MARX.
He is the founder of modernist gardening styles that signified a break from Victorian structures with flowing forms, lines of color, and the incorporation of native plants as opposed to imported plants that were the fashion before.
Over 50 species of plants were either discovered by him or named after him. Some of the plants he discovered he also popularized as houseplants—including many species of Philodendron.
The exhibit is small but rewarding if you’re a Jew who likes plants. His paintings are on exhibit and you can see how his gardening designs mirrored his painting style.
