Question about Klezmer and George Eliot

Something I’ve been curious about.

In George Eliot’s novel Daniel Deronda (1876), there’s a German-Jewish musician called Herr Julius Klesmer. So, a pretty obvious case of the Victorian love of giving characters meaningful names.

But I’m wondering about the historical use of the word “klezmer” (under any spelling), and what it would have meant in the 19th century, including how George Eliot would have been aware of it.

Part of why I’m curious is that the character Klesmer is a classical musician with high society connections, not the itinerant folk musician (the “Fiddler on the Roof”) associated with Klezmer music.
