Openly gay Dutch author and artist Willem Arondeus was a part of the country’s anti-Nazi resistance movement. In order to prevent Nazi Germany from identifying Dutch Jews, he took part in the bombing of the public records office in Amsterdam. 800,000 ID cards were successfully destroyed (1921).
