Kibbud av va’em with a… strained… parental relationship

Pretty much what the title says.

Through a lot of therapy, I’m coming to terms with the fact that, just because my mother is an amazing aunt to my cousins, and at least a decent if somewhat problematic mother to my sister, she hasn’t been a good mother to me. And I am letting go of the hope that will change.

It hurts, and I’m hurting a lot this morning.

I keep trying, because kibbud av va’em, but so often our interactions leave me feeling hurt, stressed out, or both.

She’s not abusive, and I think the modern trend of going “no contact” is being applied in situations where it’s totally inappropriate. I am already trying to walk the boundary of doing what I can to take care of her without taking (too much) from my husband, children, or myself. So dialing back the interaction doesn’t seem right?

But I’m still sad that this mitzvah is so hard and draining.

Please, any words of comfort or wisdom?
