Jews (by ancestry) who weren’t raised as such and who later started observing/learning, did you default to however your ancestors did it?

Like, if your grandma was Orthodox, is that how you got back into it? Or some other denomination? Or did you find your own path entirely? (Very curious about the last one). Would love to hear about any sort of experience regarding this. What family and friends might have thought about your choice, if you’d chosen differently in hindsight and so on.
