A recent comment thread in another post was discussing pikuach nefesh and the nuance of being allowed to kill to save a life (e.g. self-defence) vs the prohibition against murder to save a life. This got me thinking about the classic Trolley Problem: do nothing and several people die vs activate a switch to kill one person but save the others.
I have to believe that Jewish scholars somewhere have tackled this kind of problem either exactly or in similar thought exercises. Any recommendations on readings or direct thoughts from folks here?
