Is it actually true that the testimony of women was inherently suspect in ancient times?

This is a claim I’ve heard several times over the years, but I don’t know how to investigate it. Was the word of a woman in Jewish society worth less than that of a man 3000 years ago? If so, how much less? It sounds a little like temporal ethical snobery, where people assume that everything was morally backwards for all of human history until 50 years ago.
