I met my new neighbor and said I liked his yarmulke since I’m also Jewish and he got offended and said, "this is a kippot, I’m not a woman." What’s up with that?

So I deffinately don’t consider myself conservative, but I do consider myself Jewish. And I was always raised to call it a yarmulke. But this person really threw me off my game. Am I missing something or is this guy missing something?
