For one to be Jewish, is it required that their mother is Jewish as well?

Hi guys, just a Christian here having a question. Me and my friend were playing a bit of Minecraft and one thing led to another and he said in order to be Jewish your mother needs to be Jewish as well, is that true? And if so, why?
