Our family lives in the US but we have EU passports. We don’t have a long term residential plan, but I can say that my husband’s country of origin is Italy, near Rome, and he is 50/50 on whether we’d enjoy Jewish life there as he was born in the US and travels back infrequently.
I pulled numbers of Jewish populations in different countries, but I feel like that doesn’t tell the full story. For example, France has a higher number of Jews than most countries, but I don’t see a place for thriving Conservative Judaism in Paris. (https://www.jpost.com/jewish-world/jewish-news/masorti-struggles-for-a-foothold-in-france). I also didn’t feel like I fit in when we visited France as a family, but that’s just vibes. On the other hand, Poland has fewer Jews these days, but the JCC of Krakow is actually a lively place to be, having done a short study program in the area.
Would love to hear from you if you’ve lived abroad short or long term and had a great experience.
