Determining Who is Correct

As a goy, I have a question regarding the Talmud. I know the Talmud isn’t something you “read” and you need to study it with someone who understands it, and form a chavrusha. Anyway, as I was reading several passages, I noticed that the explanation for a law consisted mainly of Rabbis and/or scholars who seem to be arguing with one another, each with their own interpretation of a particular law, and this analysis/debate is what I believe you refer to as the Gemara. My question is, how do you determine which interpretation is correct? If you’re a rabbi for example, and you need to give guidance about special purity rituals, and the scenario involves a really ambivalent/complex case, whose edict do you follow and why?
