Are the Hasidic tales recorded by Martin Buber reliable?

I’m curious whether or not the Hasidic tales recorded by the Jewish philosopher Martin Buber are considered reliable by the broader Jewish community (especially the Orthodox or Hasidic communities) or not? I ask because, while the man had some interesting contributions to Jewish thought, it’s possible he wasn’t the best conveyer of history.
