Why does Judaism go by the mother in orthodox Judaism?

Hi, I’ve seen a lot of posts here about who is Jewish and I’m curious as to why it goes by the mother when most other things go by the father. Also in the Torah, it speaks about the children of Avraham, Yitzhak and Yaakov and not as much the women. In the Torah it seems like it goes by the father more. So why is it different in modern times? I’m just curious about the Halacha and where it comes from.
