Why do reform synagogues often refer to themselves as temples?

Some background knowledge to avoid unnecessary explanation: I understand the Hebrew terms beit knesset and beit midrash, the Yiddish colloquial “schul” and I’m well versed in the evolution of rabbinical Judaism from the destruction of the Temple. But why are only reform synagogues called temples. . . And who is Emmanuel?
